![]() My favorite thing about SOUL is being in a community of comrades that take social justice work very seriously. Raised in a Chinese immigrant family on the East Coast, Kevin began his organizing work there, in campaigns for the rights of underrepresented students of color & administrative accountability at his university. This summer he is working with Communities for a Better Environment, supporting CBE's efforts to raise youth voices against a proposed expansion of the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, which represents an increased threat to the health of working-class communities and communities of color in the surrounding area. Lucia Kimble SOUL Summer School has sharpened my political analysis, and armed me with practical tools to fight for a more just society in my daily work as an organizer. Lucia is the daughter of immigrants from Guatemala & México, and the oldest of seven brothers & sisters. Recently she began work at Causa Justa::Just Cause, where she is helping to build a strong base in San Francisco's Latino immigrant community, inspiring residents to stand up to the forces of displacement & gentrification, and working to defend and expand tenant rights. Mageb Hussain I Love SOUL. Great instructors, excellent curriculum, and very smart co-interns! Born & raised in San Francisco, part of a Yemeni immigrant family, Mageb started organizing in campaigns against religious discrimination, first in Michigan, and then back here in the Bay Area. This summer he continues his work with AROC, the Arab Resource & Organizing Center, building his capacity to work alongside other young Arab & Muslim men, and with other communities targeted for criminalization, in defense of their rights. Mariana Bruno I am paying close attention to the SOUL trainings and taking detailed notes. I feel they are asking the questions that need to be asked. Mariana was born and raised in Santa Ana, California, where she helped start a youth organizing collective, Un Mundo en Resistencia, as a force against gentrification, police brutality, and criminalization in her community. This summer Mariana is working with Communities for a Better Environment, organizing to demand environmental & economic justice for communities surrounding the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond. |
